Some of the best Duck shooting on the
south coast can be found Near Weymouth in Dorset on a 200 acres farm on the
world famous Jurassic Coast world
heritage coastline. The
main asset is limestone ridge on a clay bed where springs flow all year into 13
ponds before entering the
famous Chesil Fleet. The Farm has been in the Swaffield family for three generations and until
recently was a dairy farm. Another 300 acres of shooting ground is is also
available
near Hardy's monument which provides excellent sport and unprecedented views
over the Dorset coast towards Devon
This type of shooting is unlike most
average Duck Shooting. The site consists of 13 ponds with an emphasis on high driven duck. Average
bags range from 120 - 250 per day with shooting parties consisting of between four
(minimum) and ten guns. Non toxic cartridges eg bismuth required
(available if necessary)
Our aim is to provide sporting birds to suit all levels of shooting amongst a
small group of country characters providing excellent sport and hospitality.
The day starts at 0930 where guns are invited into the 18th century farmhouse
to meet Paul Swaffield and William Poole (proprietors) together with their wives for a glass of Sloe Gin, coffee and
some delicious home made sausages. There is a brief
safety talk along with rules for the day. Shooting then commences at
about 10am. There are normally four drives before lunch with the odd
stirrup cup on the way. Lunch is at 1pm back at the farmhouse together with
the shooting staff and consisting of a cuisine soup followed by a roast dinner of
locally produced meat and then cheese and biscuits. After lunch
between 2.30pm and 4.30pm there are another 3 drives and at 1630 the bag is counted
(a running tally is kept during the day and a tolerance of 10% is permitted)
average
shot/bird ratio is 4.5:1.
Some of the finest duck shooting in a unique location
Finally the answer to the
question. Is there any truth in the old saying the
"A
Duck's Quack Does not Echo"?
