Frequently Asked Questions about
Clay Pigeon Shooting

Do I need a licence to try clay shooting?
You only need a licence to own a gun. At Purbeck Shooting School we provide a range of guns for use with lessons to suit all clients.
What exactly is a shotgun?
A shotgun is a real firearm and as such demands careful handling and respect. However there is no single bullet in the chamber but the cartridge does contain about an ounce (28 gms) of tiny lead balls called shot. The shot leaves the barrel at around 900mph and has an effective range of about 60 yards. A very clear code of practice is followed to avoid accidents which will be explained to you by an instructor.
What is a Clay Pigeon or Clay Target?
It's a saucer shaped disc of brittle material about the size of a compact disc which is launched into the air from an automatic machine called a trap. By altering the angle and power of the trap the flight characteristics can be varied and the disc made to simulate the flight of real birds. If your shot hits it then it will disintegrate into a cloud of dust.
Do I need any insurance?
Whilst under supervision at the School you are covered by our insurance. When you use the facilities of the school unaccompanied you will need your own third party insurance.
Is there a minimum age to use a shotgun?
Technically no if you are under supervision, we regularly get people as young as 8 years old for instruction and they use a .410 or a 28 gauge shotgun. To own a shotgun you need to apply to the police for a shotgun certificate.
Will it hurt?
Under proper instruction you are shown how to hold the gun properly, for beginners and small people we use a lighter gun (perhaps 20 gauge). Low recoil subsonic cartridges are also available but reaction to recoil varies from person to person.
Is it noisy?
We provide ear defenders to all of our customers.
Is it difficult?
For beginners we start with easy, slow moving targets. As with most activities as you progress the targets become more difficult and challenging.
What if it’s raining on the day?
Most of our stands are under cover so you can keep dry.
Can I bring a friend?
We welcome observers as long as they do not interfere with the lessons. Alternatively they can wait in the clubhouse and have a tea or coffee.
Can I bring a group of friends or colleagues for a shooting session?
Yes we do group sessions with an instructor and the session takes about 2 hours. Give us a call to discuss your requirements
What if I am a small person?
We have a range of guns for people of different builds. We also have equipment to cater for right and left handed people.
What is the best way to try it out and see if I like it?
Come for an introductory lesson, an instructor will set you up with an appropriate gun then take you out a teach you how to hit some easy targets, you will fire up to 50 cartridges in a half hour session. After this most people come back for more.
